As from 1 February, the possibility of rising postal rates

August 1, 2023

Universal postal service tariffs may increase from 1 February, according to a decision taken by the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA). The maximum possible tariffs have been set after taking into account the request of “Lietuvos paštas” for an increase in these tariffs and a change in the applied pricing, as well as taking into account the costs of provision of these services and the losses incurred.

The maximum tariffs for universal postal items sent in Lithuania are being increased by around 35% on average, while the principles for setting international tariffs are being changed by transferring the responsibility for setting the final tariffs to “Lietuvos paštas”. This gives the company more opportunities to react quickly to price changes in the international market.

“As the regulator, we have approved the tariff cap, but it will be up to “Lietuvos psštas” to decide how much and when its rates will change,” says Giedrius Pūras, a member of the CRA Council.

In addition, taking into account the proposal of “Lietuvos paštas”, the pricing of correspondence parcels in Lithuania is changed: two weight tiers for small-sized correspondence parcels (“up to 50 g” and “from 51 to 500 g”) and two weight tiers for large-sized correspondence parcels (“up to 500 g” and “from 501 to 2,000 g”) are maintained. For all international correspondence parcels, only priority delivery terms and procedures will apply.

“We hope this will make pricing more transparent and simpler. In addition, we also see trends in the consolidation of the weight tiers of correspondence parcels by analysing the experience of other countries”, – says G. Pūras.
